Hormones are to blame

During the entire menstrual cycle, your skin may become slightly drier or, conversely, prone to oily. And a few days before menstruation, and even please with inflammation and rashes. All this is explained by the change in the amount of hormones – estrogen, progesterone and testosterone – in different phases of the cycle.

Period of menstruation

In the very first days of the cycle, estrogen and progesterone levels drop sharply. As a result, the skin looks dry and dull, wrinkles become noticeable, and the complexion becomes gray. The best solution these days is maximum hydration.

Also, during menstruation, the production of sebum increases, so it is important to cleanse the skin carefully, but carefully, in order to protect it from bacteria and possible rashes.

Cleanse your skin twice a day – Use disposable paper towels on your face to minimize inflammation. But don’t overdo it! The more you rub your skin, the more it will defend itself and release sebum, which in turn will lead to clogged pores and breakouts. If necessary, use special products – apply them locally to problem areas. Tea tree oil or special anti-inflammation creams and serums work well. And don’t forget about matting wipes – they will help remove excess sebum throughout the day.

Follicular phase

During the follicular phase, which lasts from about 10 to 16 days of your menstrual cycle, estrogen levels rise. The condition of the skin will improve before the eyes – inflammation will disappear, the firmness and elasticity of the skin will increase.

These processes are due to the increased production of collagen these days, so the skin will look hydrated and the complexion will be even and fresh.

To keep your skin in good condition, you just need to cleanse it in time and use a light moisturizer. The follicular phase is perhaps the best period for the skin when it literally glows with health.

Ovulation period

From about the 14th day of the menstrual cycle in women, the period of ovulation begins. For the next five days, the skin will be in good condition, but as soon as the levels of the hormones testosterone and estrogen begin to decrease, you will notice that the skin has become combination or prone to oily.

Unfortunately, these changes make the skin more vulnerable to bacteria. Therefore, during this period, pay special attention to hygiene. Avoid touching your face during the day and wash your hands more often. Use micellar water and toners to cleanse your face. Start using cleansing masks and replace your skincare products with lighter, oil-free ones – try to avoid products that can clog pores and cause comedones.

Luteal phase

The most unpleasant phase of the cycle begins immediately after ovulation – the luteal phase. During this period, all premenstrual symptoms appear, such as cravings for harmful foods, irritability and, of course, deterioration of the skin. During this time, it is important to maintain the skin’s moisture level.

Remember to drink enough water, and substitute herbal teas for coffee, or limit yourself to one cup a day. It is especially important during this period to avoid highly salty or sweet foods – the tendency to swelling during this period will make the skin uneven and bumpy.

A balanced diet, moderate activity, cleansing in the morning and evening and light moisturizers – these are the components of good skin condition even during the most difficult period of the menstrual cycle.
