The European Parliament has awarded Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. About it reported MEP Andrius Kubilius on Twitter. He noted that the politician was awarded an award for his “commitment to democracy and freedom of the Russian people.”
“Alexei Navalny is a Russian opposition politician, lawyer and fighter against corruption,” the European Parliament said in a statement. “He was recognized as a political prisoner and is currently in a correctional colony.”
The award ceremony will take place on December 15 at a plenary meeting in Strasbourg. The award itself was established by the European Parliament in 1988 in honor of the leader of the human rights movement in the USSR and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov. The laureate is selected annually, the amount of the prize is 50 thousand euros.
